How to Get Your Florida Crash Report (and Why You Need It)

Este artículo está escrito en inglés.

Insurance adjusters, attorneys, and courts all start with the same document: the Florida Traffic Crash Report. Getting your copy early keeps your claim moving.

Where to get it

Most Florida crash reports are available through the FLHSMV Crash Portal (the state's official online system), usually about 10 days after the crash. You can also request reports from the law enforcement agency that responded — for Tampa-area crashes that's typically the Tampa Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, or Florida Highway Patrol. A standard copy costs around $10.

Who can access it right away

Under Florida Statute § 316.066, crash reports are confidential for the first 60 days after they're filed — available only to the parties involved, their attorneys, insurers, and certain other authorized parties. As someone involved in the crash, you have the right to your report immediately; you'll just need to confirm your identity.

What to check when you receive it

Review your report carefully as soon as you have it:

  • Are the date, time, location, and vehicle details correct?
  • Does the narrative accurately describe what happened?
  • Are all drivers, passengers, and witnesses listed?
  • Is the insurance information for the other driver complete?

What if the report is wrong — or was never filed?

Factual errors (like a wrong license plate) can usually be corrected by contacting the reporting officer. Disputed conclusions about fault are harder to change, but they are not the final word — courts and insurers can weigh other evidence too.

If police never responded to your crash, you were required to self-report within 10 days. And if all of this feels like a lot while you're recovering: CrashAid's specialists help Florida accident victims track down their reports every day, and the police report is optional to start your free case review with us.
