I-4, US 92, and Alexander Street

I-4 runs along the north side of Plant City between Tampa and Lakeland. The Thirteenth Circuit's directions to the Plant City Courthouse tell drivers to take I-4 east and use exit 21, Alexander Street, toward SR 39. That is a public driving direction, not a crash study. This page does not cite a crash rate for I-4.

US 92 runs through town. Downtown, people use Baker Street and Reynolds Street to describe a crash. Park Road is another north-south name. Alexander Street and Wheeler Street carry SR 39 off exit 21. No crash study is cited for those streets here.

Plant City Police often investigate crashes inside the city limits. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office covers county roads outside the city, and the Florida Highway Patrol often handles I-4. Name the agency if you know it.

Plant City Courthouse and the Tampa circuit court

The Hillsborough Clerk lists the Plant City Courthouse at 301 N. Michigan Avenue, Room 1071, Plant City, FL 33563. An older circuit directions page has used 302 N. Michigan Avenue for the same courthouse. Confirm the entrance on hillsclerk.com or fljud13.org before you go. The main circuit courthouse remains the George E. Edgecomb Courthouse at 800 E. Twiggs Street, Tampa, FL 33602.

A crash between Plant City and Lakeland can be near the Polk County line. Name the I-4 exit. A Hillsborough filing and a Polk filing are not the same courthouse. You do not have to choose the line yourself to request a referral.

Hospitals near Plant City crashes

South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City is the local hospital for many I-4 and US 92 crash patients.

Lakeland Regional Health is a short drive east for additional trauma capacity.

Florida rules that apply after a Plant City crash

House Bill 837 (HB 837), signed in 2023, changed two rules that matter after a Florida car crash. This is general information for people hurt in Plant City who want to pursue the compensation they deserve.

Florida Statute § 768.81 now uses modified comparative fault in negligence cases. A person found more than 50 percent at fault for their own harm may not recover damages from the other party. The statute says that bar does not apply to medical-negligence cases under chapter 766.

For negligence claims that accrued after March 24, 2023, Florida Statute § 95.11 generally allows two years to file a lawsuit. Crashes before that date may still fall under the older four-year period. Acting early preserves evidence and options.

Florida is a no-fault state. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is meant to pay initial medical bills regardless of who caused the crash. Under § 627.736, you generally must receive initial medical care from a qualifying provider within 14 days of the crash, or the insurer can deny PIP medical benefits. Whether the $10,000 benefit or a $2,500 cap applies can depend on an emergency-medical-condition finding. Passenger-car PIP rules do not automatically apply to motorcycles.

After a crash in Plant City

Write I-4 and the exit, or the downtown street, such as Reynolds Street at Michigan Avenue. If a truck was involved on I-4, say so. A motor-carrier policy can differ from a family auto policy. This page does not predict what either policy will pay.

What to do after the crash

  1. Move out of traffic if you can, and call 911 when anyone is hurt or the cars cannot be moved safely.
  2. Photograph the vehicles, the signal or sign, and the road if it is safe to do so.
  3. Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance, and plate numbers. Write down witness names if someone stops.
  4. Get medical care promptly. The 14-day PIP window is short.
  5. Ask the investigating agency for the crash report. You can still request a referral before the report is ready.
  6. Be careful about a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer. You can ask for a referral first.
  7. Call (941) 770-2727 or use the form on this page. CrashAid is a free attorney referral service — English and Spanish.

Questions

Is the Plant City Courthouse at 301 or 302 North Michigan Avenue?

The Hillsborough Clerk's locations page lists 301 N. Michigan Avenue, Room 1071, Plant City, FL 33563. A circuit directions page has used 302 N. Michigan Avenue. Confirm the door before you travel. Many circuit filings are still handled at 800 E. Twiggs Street in Tampa.

Is I-4 listed as a high-crash corridor here?

No. I-4 is named because it is the highway through Plant City and because the court's own directions use exit 21. No crash-rate study is cited for it on this page.

The crash was between Plant City and Lakeland. What should I write?

Write I-4, the direction, and the exit number. Plant City is Hillsborough. Lakeland is Polk. Naming the exit is more useful than guessing the county line.

Plant City Police or the Hillsborough Sheriff?

Plant City Police often handle crashes inside the city. The Hillsborough Sheriff covers much of the unincorporated county, and the Florida Highway Patrol often handles I-4. The form works before you have the report.
