Hit-and-run: stay, call, document
Do not chase the other vehicle. Call 911, note color, direction, and any plate fragment, and ask nearby businesses about cameras before footage is overwritten. Photograph your car, debris, and the scene.
A criminal case against a fleeing driver is separate from your civil claim. You can request a CrashAid referral whether or not police have identified the driver.
Uninsured and underinsured motorists
Florida does not require most drivers to buy bodily-injury liability insurance. Insurers must offer uninsured-motorist coverage, and a named insured can reject it in writing. If UM is on your policy, it can cover what an at-fault driver should have paid when that driver has no policy, fled, or carries limits too low for the injuries.
PIP on a passenger car can still be the first medical coverage, with the same 14-day qualifying-care rule.

Questions
Is a hit-and-run a crime if only the car was damaged?
Yes. Section 316.061 covers leaving a crash with property damage. Section 316.027 applies when someone is injured or killed.
Can I request a referral with no plate number?
Yes. Describe the vehicle and the road. CrashAid is a free attorney referral service and does not require a plate number to start.
What if the other driver had no liability insurance?
Your own uninsured-motorist coverage may apply if you carry it and did not reject it in writing. A participating attorney can review the declarations page.
Does CrashAid find the fleeing driver?
Police investigate the crime. CrashAid connects you with a participating attorney for the civil side. Call (941) 770-2727.
