Hit-and-run crashes in Florida when the other driver leaves

Short answer

Leaving a Florida crash is a crime: section 316.061 for property damage, and section 316.027 when someone is injured or killed. You can still ask CrashAid for a free attorney referral if the driver fled. CrashAid is not a law firm, does not investigate plates, and does not promise that uninsured-motorist coverage will pay.

Stay at the scene and call 911

Do not chase the other car. Call 911, write down color, direction, and any plate fragment, and ask nearby businesses about cameras before the video is overwritten. The hit-and-run article lists those steps in more detail.

A criminal case against the driver, if police find one, is separate from a civil claim. A referral request does not file either one.

If nobody identifies the driver

PIP on a passenger car can still be the first medical coverage, with the same 14-day treatment issue. Uninsured-motorist coverage, if you carry it and did not reject it in writing, is the coverage the article discusses when the driver is never found. Your own insurer can still dispute the claim.

Brandon, Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Myers pages explain which sheriff or police department may have the report. The courthouse does not change because the other driver left.

Questions

Is a hit-and-run a crime even if only the car was damaged?

Yes. Florida section 316.061 covers leaving a crash with property damage. Section 316.027 applies when someone is injured or killed. The hit-and-run article states that split.

Can I request a referral with no plate number?

Yes. Describe the vehicle and the road. A missing plate does not block the form. It does limit what an attorney can pursue against a person.

Does CrashAid find the driver?

No. Police investigate the crime. A participating attorney, if one accepts a civil matter, can talk with you about coverage. CrashAid does not run searches.
