Rejection in writing is the fork in the road
If a named insured signed a written rejection, UM may not be on that policy. If nobody rejected it, the coverage may be there even when the household does not remember buying it. An attorney reads the declarations page. CrashAid does not.
The who-pays article explains the stack: PIP first for passenger cars, then a fault claim if the injury threshold is met, with UM as a possible substitute when the other driver has little or no coverage.
Hit-and-run and low limits
A driver who flees can leave you with the same practical problem as an uninsured driver. The hit-and-run page covers the criminal statutes. UM, if you have it, is a civil coverage question on top of that.
Underinsured means the other policy exists but is too small for the injuries. Say so in the form if you already know their limits. Do not guess a dollar amount you cannot support.
Questions
Can I reject uninsured-motorist coverage in Florida?
A named insured can reject UM coverage in writing. If that happened, the policy may not pay a UM claim. Ask for the declarations page before you assume you are covered.
Does the other driver have to carry bodily-injury insurance?
Most Florida drivers are not required to buy bodily-injury liability coverage. That is why UM on your own policy matters. The who-pays article describes the gap.
Will a referral force my insurer to pay?
No. A request can be shared with a participating attorney. Your insurer can dispute a UM claim. No payment is guaranteed.
